Privacy

In short

bbybike has no account, no analytics, no crash reporting and no ads. It does not track you, and there is no bbybike server that receives your data.

Some features need other services. This page lists each one, what it receives and why.

What stays on your device

Your route history (the last 25 routes), favorites and settings are stored on your device only. So is the last route and map position, which bbybike restores if you reopen the app within an hour.

Your location is used on the device for navigation. It is never sent on its own; only when you use it as a start, a destination or a search position does it become part of a request listed below.

Contacts and calendar events are read only when you pick one as a place. They are used on the device and are not stored or sent anywhere else.

What leaves your device, and to whom

Search: what you type, and the map area you are looking at, goes to Apple Maps search (MapKit). If Apple limits or fails the request, it goes to Photon by komoot (photon.komoot.io) instead. Looking up the address of a position (reverse geocoding) also goes to Photon, with the position rounded. Answers are cached on your device for up to 30 days.

Routes in Berlin: the start and destination coordinates and your route preferences go to BBBike.org (ios.api.bbbike.de). This connection is plain HTTP, not encrypted. You can turn it off with Settings, Experimental, Offline Routing in Berlin. Routes everywhere else are calculated on your device and sent nowhere.

Map tiles: the map is loaded from OpenFreeMap. As with any web request, OpenFreeMap sees your IP address and which map area you load.

Region packs: the data for routing outside Berlin and for the map is downloaded from Apple’s servers (Background Assets), with the privacy terms of the App Store.

Tips: tips use Apple In-App Purchase. Apple processes the payment; bbybike receives no payment details.

Other services

Apple, Photon (komoot), BBBike.org and OpenFreeMap have their own privacy policies. bbybike sends them only what is listed above.
